Loughcrew Guided Tour
Tour Description
The Loughcrew Cairns tour will commence at the Megalithic Centre and continue to visitors' car park and uphill to cairns. The tour will pause at various vantage points to outline its history and archaeology. The Stone Age will be discusses with emphasis on the New Stone Age (Neolithic) as most of the monuments at Loughcrew are from this period. The tour will ascend the hill known as Cairn Bane East where there are the remains of 7 cairns, many features will be noted including examples of Megalithic Art. There are also sun alignments at various passage tombs especially Cairn T that aligns to the rising sun at equinox when the sun beams up the passage highlighting some of the ancient art. This site is also known as Sliabh na Cailli meaning mountain of the witch or hag and some of the folklore regarding this title will be offered at the Hag's Chair which is a kerbstone of the cairn.
Loughcrew hills is a wonderful vantage point to view many points of interest on the landscape, parts of at least 18 counties can be seen on a clear day.
Suitable footwear and clothing are advised when visiting this site as it is a steep incline and can be slippery in wet weather. The duration of this tour of the cairns will be 1.5/2 hours long
