Brief history of Megalithic Centre

Nestled in at the base of the Hill of the Witch at Loughcrew Oldcastle Co. Meath is a unique new development Loughcrew Megalithic Centre. The centre has been a labour of love as Niall’s Great Grandmother’s Cottage has been restored where Maggie Heaney was born. Niall’s grandmother Nellie was also born here and Niall’s father Martin himself was reared in this cottage as a young child. Restored to capture the traditional agricultural sense of those times the centre consists of Hostel Accommodation, Coffee Shop, Exhibition Room, Museum, Campsite and extensive car and coach parking. Atop Sliabh na Caillaigh is Cairn T a 5,500 year old Neolithic passage tomb, the oldest surviving stone building in Europe. Open to the public with OPW guides in place from May to end August Cairn T contains the famous Equinox Stone lit up at the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes each year.
